Five of the eight volcanoes that form the majestic Virunga Mountains lie within Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, a safe haven for the critically endangered mountain gorilla.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park has Rwanda's largest population of mountain gorillas, this park offers scenic views and lush rainforests.

Genocide Memorial Museum

The Kigali Genocide Memorial holds the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

Kigali City Tour

In the center of Rwanda stands the capital, Kigali. The city consists of a wide variety of hills, ridges, and valleys and boasts a vivid restaurant and nightlife scene.

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by a sense of Africa driver guide and transferred to Kigali Serena for a check-in built around a polished granite atrium; this relaxed hotel is 5km from the Kigali Genocide Memorial and 10km from Kigali International Airport. Informal rooms with pan-African styling have free Wi-Fi, flat screens, minibars, safes, and tea and coffee making facilities.

  • Overnight at Kigali Serena Hotel
  • Breakfast

After breakfast, you will be collected by your driver-guide and taken on the city tour for Kigali including a visit to the genocide memorial.  Thereafter drive east to Akagera National Park (125 km/2.5 hrs) and check-in at Ruzizi Tented Camp. Dominated by the labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering Akagera River, the most remote source of River Nile, Akagera National Park (1,075 km²) is archetypal African savannah.

  • Overnight at Ruzizi Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner – Full board

On your morning game drives in the park you will encounter the grazers such as, antelopes, Hippos, Buffaloes as well as browsers in the form of towering giraffes, after which you will return to the lodge for a lunch break as you prepare to take a boat trip on Lake Ihema, home to the aquatic life of the park. Here you may glance at the crocodiles, hippos and water-loving birds making a living. In the evening you will return to the lodge for another game drive.

  • Overnight at Ruzizi Tented Camp – Full board
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

After breakfast, you will be collected by your guide and transferred to Nyungwe Forest National park, about a 6-hour drive away from Kigali for your check-in at One and Only Nyungwe Lodge. Nyungwe Forest National Park’s glorious sense of expansiveness is among its most striking features.

The 970 km² of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps and bogs in the majestic hills of southeast Rwanda is the largest remaining ‘island’ of Montagne forest in East and Central Africa. It is also home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, 200 types of trees, hundreds of flowering plants, over 100 species of orchids and sensational lobelias, and 13 recorded species of primates, 25% of the African primate checklist, including the acrobatic Angola colobus that move in troops of several hundred and an estimated 500 chimpanzee (often seen from the forest trails during the rainy season) as well as L’Hoest’s monkey, olive baboon, grey-cheeked mangabey and red-tailed monkey.

Bird enthusiasts will not be disappointed with over 300 species including 24 Albertine Rift endemics e.g. the spectacular Ruwenzori turaco and several iridescent birds.

  • Overnight at Nyungwe Top Hill View Lodge – Full board
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Arise at dawn and transfer to the forest for a chimpanzee tracking experience.

Although it is possible to track and see chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest, this is in very hilly terrain (high ridges and deep valleys) in a rainforest and the chimps themselves are only semi-habituated and tend to move far and wide over a large area. This makes the tracking hard and unpredictable and sighting the chimps hard to guarantee.

The national park does not practice a refund policy in case of failure to sight. In the afternoon, time permitting, you will be taken for a canopy walk. From the park information centre, descend the 40om slant via a zig-zag footpath to the first tower deep in the forest valley for a hour and a half walk on the Canopy Walk’s suspension bridge. You can see some unique ‘canopy’ species such as apes, birds, butterflies, plants, insects, flowers, and other animals. You will then return to the lodge for a relaxed rest of the day.

  • Overnight at Nyungwe Top Hill View Lodge – Full board
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

After breakfast, you will head for Lake Kivu with its idyllic scenery. Together with her 7,000 km² catchment area and multiple islands and surrounding hills, Lake Kivu is gorgeous. Lying in the Albertine (western) Rift and covering most of Rwanda’s western border with Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu, the largest water body is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and the 6th largest in Africa. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.

  • Overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel – Full board
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

In the morning you can swim, boat ride, hire a boat and visit the local islands or simply lie on the beach and be mesmerized. Enjoy a boat trip on the lake in the afternoon. In the evenings at Gisenyi, be awed at the red glow atop the nearby Nyiragongo volcano across the border in Democratic Republic of Congo which is still active today.

  • Overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel – Full board
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

After breakfast, you will be collected by your driver guide and transferred to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. Check-in on arrival and have lunch and the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

  • Overnight at Tiloreza Volcanoes Eco lodge – Full board
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

After early morning breakfast, you will be collected by your guide and transferred to the park headquarters for a brief of your gorilla tracking experience and allocation of your trekking porters; you will then start your gorilla trekking adventure at the foothills of the Virungas with stirring views in all directions.

Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for an hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting; raising their young. Coming face to face with a giant silverback must truly be one of the greatest wildlife adventures! In the afternoon, enjoy a community visit.

  • Overnight at Tiloreza Volcanoes Eco lodge – Full board
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
